Distinguished and Famous people from Gympie
🌟 Andrew Fisher
Andrew Fisher settled in Gympie after migrating from Scotland and working in Queensland’s mines. In 1891 he became president of the local miners’ association and Workers’ Political Organisation. Election as Gympie’s state member followed in 1893, before his move to federal politics. He served three terms as prime minister, with reforms including the establishment of the Commonwealth Bank. His national career had a substantial Gympie foundation: mining, union organisation and local political activity preceded the responsibilities of federal government.
🩺 Arthur Crawford
Arthur Crawford completed part of his early hospital residency at Gympie after graduating in medicine in 1946. General practice, specialist surgical training and army medical service followed. In parliament he later pushed for changes to hospital management, financial administration and nursing education, becoming a persistent critic of Queensland’s health system. The positions he took could unsettle fellow government members as readily as opponents. Gympie’s connection is the practical hospital work near the beginning of that career, before the operating theatre was joined by the debating chamber. He continued a substantial commitment to professional and community organisations outside politics.
🌰 Norm Greber
Norm Greber moved to Amamoor in 1919 and developed a farm he called Nutty Glen. Bananas and pineapples helped make a living, but macadamias became his lasting interest. He selected promising trees, assessed their crops and worked out effective grafting methods, helping turn a native nut into a commercial orchard crop. His orchard reached about a thousand trees by the end of the 1920s. Much of the work was done without machinery, with a horse assisting on the hills. The name Nutty Glen was playful; the observation, persistence and practical experiments behind it were serious contributions to an emerging industry.
